The tomato is a healthy fruit. Tomatoes contain a lot of vitamin C, carotene, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6 and the minerals potassium, phosphorus and magnesium.
The tomato contains a dye, namely lycopene, that human cells can protect against the adverse effects of nitrogen oxides.
Nitrogen oxides are including in tobacco smoke and exhaust fumes. Lycopene may also play a role in protection against cancer.
It belongs to the plant dyes which are known as the so-called carotenoids.
Tomatoes were also touted as an aphrodisiac, hence the nickname “pommes d’amour” in French. The Italians they find gold.
There they are known as pomodoro. The name in the southern German-speaking areas “Paradeis” in Hungary is called “Paradicsom” (with the same meaning: paradise).
